Refining Foundational Techniques

The six-week course offers participants an immersive experience, simulating a professional studio environment where they can refine their design talents.  Participants will embark on a deep exploration of crucial staging and spatial techniques, meticulously focusing on mastering the principles of effective staging, dynamic spacing, and compelling character or element groupings. This foundational segment is designed to equip students with a robust understanding of how to compose visually arresting and narrative-driven scenes.

The curriculum also encompasses the indispensable skill of deciphering and analyzing storyboards—a process vital for extracting design requirements and translating narrative vision into tangible visual assets. Throughout the six-week duration, the class operates as a simulated studio environment, providing a high-pressure, high-reward setting. Each participant is positioned in the spotlight, consistently challenged with assignments that require them to demonstrate and elevate their burgeoning design prowess under conditions that mirror industry expectations. This rigorous, hands-on structure ensures that participants not only learn theoretical concepts but also gain practical experience in presenting their work and meeting project deadlines.

Jose D Hernandez presents an introductory Background Design class tailored for newcomers entering the industry, providing insights into what to expect during their initial gigs. This course zeroes in on television animation, emphasizing the principle that less is more – strategically creating around the character to drive the narrative.

Background design holds a pivotal role in the pre-production phase of television animation and streaming. Without well-crafted environments, the narrative could easily come to a standstill. It's worth noting that prop design is often grouped with environments due to the fact that many designers can efficiently handle a larger workload encompassing both aspects.
